Free Calibration Management Software: What You Get and What to Check

6 min read Published

Full disclosure up front: Axiospec has a free plan, so weigh our take accordingly. A free calibration tool is only worth it if it keeps the records an auditor asks for and does not quietly expire. This guide covers what a free plan should include, how the free options compare, and exactly what you get on Axiospec Free.

What you get on Axiospec Free

Axiospec Free is a permanent plan, not a trial. It costs nothing, needs no credit card and has no end date. It runs the same software as the paid plans. The paid plans add capacity, and Professional and above add REST API access.

  • 50 active instruments. Archived instruments do not count toward the limit, and archiving keeps their full calibration history and audit trail.
  • Unlimited users. Technicians, supervisors and your auditor can each have their own login.
  • Automatic recall: a Due Calendar of what is due, due soon and overdue, with reminder emails.
  • PDF calibration certificates generated from the record, with e-signatures and maker-checker approval.
  • A tamper-evident audit trail of every reading, edit and signature.
  • Gage R&R and full MSA, plus per-instrument uncertainty budgets that feed the test uncertainty ratio.
  • Native iOS and Android apps with QR scanning and offline capture. The full flow also runs in any web browser.
Tip: Every new account starts with 45 days on Professional. When they end, you move to Free unless you pick a plan, so nothing is ever charged without your say.

What any free calibration plan should cover

A free plan earns its place only if you could walk into an audit on it. Check these points before you load a single instrument, whichever tool you are looking at.

  • Enough instruments for your fleet, counted the way you work. Ask whether retired gages count against the limit.
  • Enough logins. A plan capped at one or two users pushes everyone else back to a shared spreadsheet.
  • Due-date reminders. Some free tiers switch off automatic notifications, and reminders are the main reason to leave a spreadsheet.
  • An audit trail that shows who changed what and when.
  • Certificates kept with the instrument they belong to.
  • A way out. You should be able to export every record in a format you can open without the vendor.
  • No end date. Check whether free means a permanent plan or a trial of 14 to 60 days.

How the free options compare

Most established calibration systems have no permanent free plan. GAGEtrak, GAGEpack, IndySoft, ProCal, Fluke MET/TEAM and Qualer (now MasterControl) are paid products, and some of these vendors offer a time-limited trial instead.

GageList has a small free tier: 25 gages, 5 users and 5 MB of storage, without automatic notifications.

Several newer tools also have free tiers, mostly between 20 and 50 instruments, and most of them limit the number of users.

Axiospec Free gives you 50 active instruments with unlimited users and the whole platform, with no time limit.

A spreadsheet is free too, and it is where most calibration programs start. It has no automatic reminders and no record of who changed what.

We checked these vendors' published plans in late September and early October 2026. Plans change, so confirm current terms with each vendor.

When Free stops being enough

Free fits a shop or lab with up to 50 instruments in service. If you track more, Starter covers 500 active instruments for $59 a month, and every paid plan keeps unlimited users.

You can also archive instruments you have retired to stay under 50. We let you know as you approach the limit, and we never delete data or block access without warning.

Moving to Axiospec Free from a spreadsheet

Most teams arrive with a spreadsheet or an export from an older system. You do not have to retype it.

  1. Create a free account. No card and no sales call.
  2. Send us your spreadsheet or your old system's export and we load it for you, free on every plan and usually within a couple of business days. Or import it yourself from CSV, Excel, GAGEpack or GAGEtrak exports.
  3. Pick the standard you work to. The calibration form then marks the fields that standard requires.
  4. Log the next calibration from a phone at the bench or from any browser.

Common questions

Is there free calibration management software?
Yes. Axiospec Free is a permanent plan for up to 50 active instruments with unlimited users, at no cost and with no credit card. GageList has a smaller free tier, and several newer tools have free tiers of their own. Most established systems are paid products, sometimes with a trial.
Is Axiospec Free a trial?
No. Free has no end date. Every new account starts with 45 days on the Professional plan and then moves to Free unless you choose a paid plan. Nothing is charged unless you choose a plan.
How many users can I add on the free plan?
As many as you need. Every Axiospec plan, Free included, has unlimited users.
What counts toward the 50-instrument limit?
Only active instruments. Archived instruments do not count, and archiving keeps their full calibration history and audit trail.
Is the free plan enough for an ISO 9001 or ISO/IEC 17025 audit?
The plan does not decide that. Your records and your process do. Axiospec Free keeps the same records as the paid plans: a tamper-evident audit trail, certificates on each instrument and the fields your standard requires. Certification or accreditation still depends on your own program and your assessor.
Can I export my data from the free plan?
Yes. Exports, including the audit pack, work the same on every plan.
Will you move our existing records for free?
Yes, on every plan, Free included. Send whatever your current system gives you and we load it for you, usually within a couple of business days.

Put it into practice

Got a gage list? Send it over and we load it for you, usually in a couple of business days. Free on every plan. Then log every calibration to a tamper-evident audit trail and produce records on demand.

Axiospec is a documentation and workflow tool. It helps you keep clean, traceable, audit-ready records; certification depends on your own processes, scope, and assessor.
